Description

From 2014-2021, I advised The Pirate Press, Harborside Academy's student newspaper. I founded this newspaper with a group of students in 2014, and since then the publication has gone on to win two state-level awards, including First Place in the 2019 KEMPA Scholastic Journalism Competition. Students were responsible for all content and layout design for each edition, with production being entirely facilitated through Google Docs, Google Team Drives, and LucidPress.

In 2020, I successfully transitioned The Pirate Press to an online format during the COVID-19 school closure so that students on the staff could continue to collaborate from a distance. Students contributed to the blog from their homes, learning about how to create content and layout for blog posts through screencasts that I created explaining the steps in the process. Students from my English classes were also invited to contribute to this edition remotely, and a survey was sent out via Google Forms to all students and staff in order to gather their perspectives as to how the COVID-19 pandemic was impacting their life. This was done in order to get authentic voices in the newspaper to support the ideas that students on the staff were communicating through their stories.

Online Edition

This online edition was launched in May 2020, when producing a print edition was impractical due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students collaborated virtually to produce this edition, which featured articles not only from newspaper staffers but also from other students in the school.
